Mike Tyson in his prime fought a lot of tough opponents and one of them was his infamous fight saga with Mitch Green. Back in the late 80s, Tyson was tearing down all his opponents as a 19-year-old on his way to getting the boxing heavyweight championship. Other heavyweights wanted to fight the ‘Kid Dynamite’ because of the paycheck and Mitch Green was no different. The Detroit native was known for his involvement in gang fights and crimes but it simultaneously outweighed his boxing achievements.

Green used TV and video messages to trash-talk Tyson to get into the fight and he succeeded. The fight took place in May 1986 inside the iconic Madison Square Garden and Tyson just dominated the whole fight.

The 6’4” Green couldn’t use his advantage against the quick and powerful Tyson. After 10 rounds, Tyson was declared the winner via unanimous decision. The fight didn’t end in a knockout and the fighter claimed that he deliberately prevented himself from knocking out Green as he wanted to punish him.

The vendetta between Mike Tyson and Mitch Green that resulted in a street fight

After the Mike Tyson fight,  Mitch Green retired from boxing but his pride was hurt by that loss, and wanted to get a chance to settle it, which he got after a couple of years.

In 1988, Mitch Green got to know about Tyson shopping in his local area which gave him the option to confront Tyson. Tyson went to a shop called Dapper Dams to collect a luxurious jacket for himself and then, Green showed up asking Tyson for another fight. Tyson didn’t back out and both squared off on the street where Tyson landed some heavy shots on Green.

While talking about the incident on his Podcast, Tyson said: “I have turned around and Mitch Green and these guys,  all scared and then it was on from then. He was just talking a lot. I started punching him and  I dropped him a couple of times, he kept getting up. I’m in car right now…he rushes through my car he breaks the side mirror. So I went out the car and I hit Mitch and he went down and I grabbed his head I hit him, boom. His head hit the floor and hit the concrete and that’s when he was out. I got scared because he didn’t move. I thought I killed him.”

Tyson felt relieved when he got to know that Green was alive after the altercation. But the pictures of him with a busted left eye were all over the media. Green filed a lawsuit against the Heavyweight champion and was granted $45k. After that, every time that altercation was brought up, Green claimed that Tyson sucker punched him.
