Minecraft is a huge sandbox world with hundred of biomes, including vast oceans. Therefore, there are parts of the map constantly submerged and can't be explored normally. In order to get an easier time exploring underwater, you might need to enchant your gear with useful buffs. In this article, we are going to showcase the top 5 useful enchantments for exploring underwater in Minecraft.

5 - Respiration

Respiration is a helmet enchantment for extending breathing time underwater. It extends the duration you can stay underwater for 15 seconds each level. With Respiration III, you should be able to dive for 60 seconds without having to submerge.

Furthermore, this effect can be extended further by 10 seconds if you wear a turtle shell, one of the most common ways to breathe underwater in Minecraft.

In older versions of Minecraft, this enchantment also has a hidden effect of letting you see a little bit better underwater as well. Overall, Respiration is a nice effect to have, but not nearly as useful as a water-breathing potion.

4 - Aqua Affinity

Aqua Affinity is an enchantment that increases underwater mining speed. Similar to Respiration, this is a helmet-only enchantment. To simulate the water pressure when submerged, mining block underwater takes five times as long as normal. Wearing items with this enchantment allow players to ignore that mechanic.

If you plan on building a base underwater, this enchantment is a must. Mining without Aqua Affinity is super slow and therefore not recommended. You can build a conduit for even faster mining.

3 - Depth Strider

Depth Strider is an enchantment that increases underwater movement speed. It is exclusive to boots. Usually, moving underwater is much slower than on land, which slows down your exploration speed. With Depth Strider, this effect is ignored and you would be able to move around as fast as walking on land.

You need level 3 of the enchantment for the full effect, as each level only cut the speed penalty down by 1/3. Depth strider only affects horizontal movement speed underwater. Vertical movement speed is not affected.

2 - Riptide

Riptide is one of the more "unique" enchantments in the game. It can only be applied to tridents, which allows players to use the trident to move around faster underwater. Players can only throw Tridents enchanted with Riptide while standing in water, rainy weather, or underwater. The throw will launch the player alongside the item.

The formula for the number of blocks the trident throws the user is (6 × level) + 3 when in rain, snow, or standing in water, and (4 × level) + 3 while underwater.

1 - Impaling

Impaling is an exclusive enchantment for tridents, allowing it to deal extra damage each hit against aquatic mobs. Each level of Impaling adds 2.5 damage per hit, with the maximum being V, which equates to a 12.5 damage bonus.

This enchantment allows players to dispatch all aquatic mobs. This includes axolotls, dolphins, guardians, elder guardians, squid, glow squids, turtles and all variants of fish. However, Drowned do not count, as they are classified as undead instead of aquatic.
