The golf world were left in shock in December 2023 when Jon Rahm, a top member of the PGA Tour left the circuit. The Spaniard would make an exit from the tour and joined LIV Golf on a massive $600 million deal. Rahm has now revealed the aftermath of it including Tiger Woods‘ reaction to it.
Woods had been one of the strong critics of LIV Golf. The 15-time major champion was offered an $800 million deal at the start to join the breakaway tour.
Though his Ryder Cup teammate Rory McIlroy supported his decision, the same cannot be said of Woods. As per Rahm, he has not heard from him since his move to LIV Golf.
Tiger? No, not really. I mean, Tiger, I texted him and the people that try to reach out, you know, the process, when I signed and I just let him know, 'Hey, you know, this is a personal decision'.Jon Rahm on Tiger Woods as per Golf.com.
The 2023 Masters champion did not further elaborate the situation and when exactly he reached out to Woods. In the past few weeks, Woods seems to have soften his stance on LIV Golf and PIF as he claimed he was happy to welcome them to be a part of the PGA Tour.
This revelation from Rahm though has put some questions on Woods’ feeling. There had been previous speculations regarding how this move will affect his friendship with him and McIlroy. Only time will unveil the answer to this question.
Jon Rahm admits money offered by LIV Golf played a huge part in his decision
The other big talking point apart from Jon Rahm’s move to LIV Golf is the money he was offered. In an interview with ESPN, the two-time major champion did admit that the money offered played a huge part in his decision.
The former World No. 1 said he did not want to skip this point. He further pointed out how he was getting paid more while playing the same sport.
I don’t want to skip through this point cause there’s no point, there’s a big change in the way the golfers get compensated. I’d be lying if it wasn’t a big part of it. In a nutshell, I’m getting paid more to play the same sport and have more time.Jon Rahm on money playing a factor in his decision to join LIV Golf via ESPN.
Rahm further claimed that this decision was also influenced due to his duties as a husband and a father. While the fans continue to debate around this move of his, he has enjoyed a good start to his LIV Golf career.
In the first event at Mayakoba, the 29-year-old was in contention for the title in his debut. He eventually finished third behind his good friend Sergio Garcia and eventual winner Joaquin Niemann. Meanwhile his team, Legion XIII claimed the team crown in this event
