Zabit Magomedsharipov declared his retirement from MMA in June of this year. Leaving the world of combat sports at the peak of his powers just like his friend Khabib Nurmagomedov. His last fight was in 2019 against Calvin Kattar which he won via unanimous decision. But it seems there is still hope that he might return to the Octagon one day.
Recently speaking to Red Corner MMA Khabib Nurmagomedov addressed Zabit’s retirement. He said, “We are good friends and always talk, but we didn’t discuss his retirement…I think he left because of personal reasons. It’ll be interesting to talk to him about it…Unlike me, he didn’t promise his mother…If you pique his interest, anything is possible.”
There has never been a better time for Magomedsharipov to make a comeback and establish himself as a force in the Featherweight class than right now, with Alexander Volkanovski, the current champion, moving up to the Light-Weight division to take on Islam Makahachev. However, it is very unlikely as Zabit Magomedsharipov has moved on to pursue a career in medical sciences.
The real reason behind Zabit Magomedsharipov leaving the UFC
When Zabit Magomedsharipov declared his retirement in June it took the MMA community by shock. Ariel Helwani, an MMA journalist, asserted earlier this year that Magomedsharipov’s abrupt resignation was mostly motivated by his religion. However, the formerly rising featherweight star finally spoke up and explained the underlying cause of his choice.
The Russian allegedly became frustrated with the UFC’s false promises, they never gave him a shot at the championship. Additionally, Magomedsharipov disclosed that his fellow featherweights avoided him, which prevented him from booking a fight. He said, “The main reason was I was not able to fight. They didn’t give me a title shot. They promised me one thing and did another. They promised me and didn’t keep that promise. That was the main reason why I got mad.”

Magomedsharipov also suggested that he would at some point think about returning to the octagon. But for the time being, he insisted that he has no intention to make comeback as he focuses on his career in medical sciences. Magomedsharipov will remain among the wasted potential in UFC who could have achieved far more than he did.
