Released in 2012, PSY’s Gangnam style music video has broken every record on Youtube and currently, it has received over 2 billion views—which makes it the most watched video online.
The world has about 7 billion people and this particular video has received 2 billion views—that should tell you it’s definitely an achievement. It doesn’t necessary mean each view is by a different person though. I have watched it about 20 times so have others…
According to Youtube, the video has forced them to upgrade their counter—it has now changed the maximum view limit to 9,223,372,036,854,775,808, or more than nine quintillion.
Google, which owns YouTube, later told website The Verge that engineers “saw this coming a couple months ago and updated our systems to prepare for it”.
YouTube now uses a 64-bit integer for its video counter, which means videos have a maximum viewer count of 9.22 quintillion.
And the guy at Youtube commented; ‘We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. “Gangnam Style” has been viewed so many times we had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (9,223,372,036,854,775,808)!
Hover over the counter in PSY’s video to see a little math magic and stay tuned for bigger and bigger numbers on YouTube.”
