Delfina Suarez’s dad, Luis Alberto Suárez Daz, popularly known as Luis Suarez, is an Uruguayan professional footballer who plays as a striker for Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club, Grêmio and the Uruguay national team. Nicknamed El Pistolero (‘The Gunman’), Suarez is known for his adroit finishing inside and outside the box and is regarded as one of the greatest strikers of all time.

Suarez began his senior club career at Nacional in 2005. He has since played for Liverpool, Barcelona and Athletico Madrid. He has won two European Golden Shoes, an Eredivisie Golden Boot, a Premier League Golden Boot and a Pichichi Trophy. Suarez has also scored over 500 career goals for club and country.
Suárez was part of a dominant trio in Barcelona alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar. The trio, Dubbed MSN, won the treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League. Suarez became the first player since 2009 to win both Pichichi and European Golden Shoes other than Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
In Barcelona, Suarez won additional trophies, including three La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey. In 2020, he signed for Atletico Madrid after he was unceremoniously dropped from Barcelona and won his fifth La Liga title in his debut season with the Colchoneros.
At the international level, Suarez is Uruguay’s all-time highest goalscorer and all-time top scorer of FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the CONMEBOL region. He has also represented his country in four FIFA World Cups, four editions of the Copa América, the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. Suarez was also named in the 2010 World Cup All-Star Team and won the 2011 Copa América, where he was awarded Best Player.
Apart from his huge success as a player, Suarez has also been enshrouded in controversies, including a goal-line handball against Ghana at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, biting opponents on three occasions, diving allegations and racial slurs and incidents.
On the other hand, Delfina Suarez’s mother, Sofia Balbi, is an Instagram star and entrepreneur who comes from a comfortable background. Her father was a banker who migrated to Catalonia when Sofia was only 14 years old.
Balbi and Suarez met when the former was 13 years old, and the latter was working as a street sweeper at the age of 15. They began a romantic relationship which was approved by Balbi’s parents, even though her boyfriend was from a poor background and looked like he was from the wrong side of the tracks.
In his autobiography, Crossing the Line, Suarez wrote: “When my daughter is thirteen, if she brings home a fifteen-year-old boyfriend who looks like he might be from the wrong side of the tracks, I might not take so kindly to him. Not only did they seem to accept me, but they also appeared to like me.
“When Sofi’s father went away for work, I would help her mother out with jobs around the house, such as lighting the boiler. Sometimes Sofi and I would have disagreements, and her mum would defend me. I suppose they valued the effort I put in just to see Sofi.
“Here was this kid from Montevideo who couldn’t afford the bus journey to Solymar, but he always found a way to see their daughter. I think they realised I would have walked if I’d had to.
“There were days when I had the money to get there but not enough money to get back, and so I used to hitchhike home in the early hours. I had to be at training at Nacional the next day after all.”Part of Suarez’s success as a footballer can be attributed to his wife, Balbi. When her family relocated to Catalonia, Suarez had to find ways to be with her as their long-distance relationship was not working. After helping Nacional win the 2006 domestic title, he was offered the chance to move to FC Groningen in Holland. Suarez seized the opportunity to move to Europe to be close to her. The rest, they say, is history.
The couple got married in March 2009 at a civil ceremony in Amsterdam and a religious ceremony later in December of the same year. The couple remains close friends with the Argentine football star Lionel Messi and his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo.
Although both families have left Barcelona, their friendship is reportedly still very tight.
