Cole Palmer single-handedly dragged Chelsea to a sixth placed finish in the Premier League last season. The 22-year-old was by far the best player under Mauricio Pochettino for a ‘dysfunctional’ Chelsea side that couldn’t qualify for the Champions League.
However, Palmer’s 22 goals and 11 assists played a huge role as Chelsea somehow managed to salvage a disastrous campaign. The youngster was directly involved in 33 goals in the English top flight, more than any other player in the League.
He also dropped commendable performances for The Three Lions at the Euros in Germany. Besides his build-up play and ability to carry the attack, the forward was also deadly from the penalty area. His precision and success rate from twelve yards out is so deadly that new manager Enzo Maresca has already named him as the go-to penalty taker this season.
With enough players to field four separate starting XIs, it is unclear who Maresca will start this season. However, there is no doubt as to the fact that the £1.2 billion worth squad will be built around the 22-year-old. Palmer played his first game of the season in a 2-0 defeat against reigning champions and his former side Man City.
Fans react as Cole Palmer wins Young Player of the Year
Football X unanimously approved Cole Palmer being awarded the tile of Young Player of the Year for the 2023/24 season. A fan commented that he is following in the footsteps of Phil Foden and will soon become the best player in the competition. With several additions to the Chelsea squad, fans were convinced that Palmer will finally help Chelsea to a title this year.
Amidst all the support, there were fans that spoke up against the player, stating that the award should’ve gone to either Alejandro Garnacho or Kobbie Mainoo. Almost every other comment congratulated the 22-year-old for his achievement as fans expected more of the same this season. Despite his award, many laughed at how there was no room for the player in the best XI from the last campaign.
Chelsea play their next game against Servette FC in an attempt to qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League. The Blues play their next Premier League game against Wolves, who will be out to pick up their first win after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal on matchday 1.
